Crowd following:
A squirrel ran under the car this morning.  Hastily applied brakes spared its life.  Even people are usually not dumb enough to run in front of a moving car.  But we do seem to have our share of folly.  Our greatest weakness appears to be following the crowd.  That has the advantage of minimizing the brain activity that it would take to make a rational decision.  It takes so little brain power (Emily Sylwestrak Peter Scheiffele Follow the Crowd NATURE vol. 504 no. 7474 November 7, 2013 page 6) that plastic beads can to it.  I cannot resist repeating the Mark Twain quote with which the article ends.  “Whenever you find yourself ob the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
